The BEST Homemade Poptarts

The Best Homemade Poptarts

Saying that I have the recipe for the best homemade poptarts is a pretty bold statement, but I'll let you in on the secret; it's all in the crust!

I came across this recipe for pie crust one day while scouring the internet, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint! It's crumbly, yet it holds together, and it's very flavorful. This crust is like a biscuit and a shortbread cookie had a baby! I have fallen so in love with this pie crust, that I find excuses to use it in other recipes, hence - homemade poptarts.

Obviously, the poptart filling is also very important, but since Smuckers makes the best strawberry jam (my opinion), it was a no-brainer.

I will admit, it was a struggle not to eat them as soon as I removed them from the oven.

These are perfect for a back-to-school treat!

Roll between wax paper to minimize messes

Use your largest cookie cutter to avoid having to measure out, and cut rectangles

Slightly mound jam into inner dough, avoiding outer 1/2 inch

Use a fork to crimp down sides of pastry

Slowly drizzle glaze onto the middle of the pastry (it can overflow quickly)

The BEST Homemade Poptarts
Poptarts
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cup crisco (or coconut oil that is in a soft-solid state, if you're wanting to take the healthier route)
  • 3 Tbsp white sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Smuckers Natural Strawberry Jam
Topping
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 Tbsp milk
  • colored sugar crystals (optional)

Instructions
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, shortening, sugar, and salt. Blend together with a pastry cutter until crumbly.
  • In a small bowl, mix egg with water. Blend into flour mixture.
  • Divide dough into three, and press each portion into a disk in between to pieces of wax paper,  reserving two of them in your freezer until you want to make that killer apple pie recipe you've been wanting to make - you're welcome.
  • Roll out dough between wax paper to about 1/4 inch thick - remove one side of wax paper
  • Use a large cookie cutter (who wants to measure out and cut squares?!?!) to cut out dough, keeping an even count
  • Prick half of dough shapes with a fork several times
  • Place unpricked shapes onto a cookie sheet
  • add jam to middle of the shapes, avoiding outer 1/2 inch of dough
  • place pricked dough shapes on top of jam filled shapes
  • use fork to crimp down sides
  • Bake for 14-16 minutes or until edges begin to turn gold

     For The Topping:

  • mix all ingredients in a small bowl, slowly adding milk, until it is a thick glaze-like consistency.
  • drizzle glaze over poptarts while still warm
  • add colorful sugar crystals, if desired

Enjoy!!
